i’m mourning a low mourn a slowly-creasing bend

i’m mourning a low mourn
a slowly-creasing bend in fabric
a place where water has no where to flow—

i’m not part of a window shade that
intently lowers from blazing afternoons
towards crisp mornings

i don’t get an internal sinking feeling that
autumn’s smaller days are waking
only to wane—

october is phoenix august and june
my heart yearns for chilled-purple twilight

no frost on windshields
no wet aromas of misty clouds
dragging over dirt

no yellowing, mellowing of resigned leaves
aware of singularity, turning
or stretching sunflowers at
attention’s awe of seizing
golden light

no dew-drenched grassy fields sparking
glistened shards of embedded diamonds

no pinion wafts
awakened by twilight
—for this absent siren of encroaching fall
is cause for sorrowful dreams

no closet rifling for a cozy sweatshirt
socks, or thoughts of firewood
there are no spaces of moving time
or saying goodbye to summer’s open freedom
palm fronds thrive on permanent
vacation

i mourn that I can’t mourn—

there's no season slipping away
or to love through loss
or fond outdoor memories to line
longing’s funeral march

instead, the perpetual roll of heat's nothingness
and my grief over an absent tumble
of approaching autumn grief

is haunting

🔥what inspires me today is my 20-year old son,

🔥what inspires me today is my 20-year old son, Evan. In July, he signed up to be part of AmeriCorps. Unsure of how he’d do living in Mississippi for a month in the sweltering heat, to be with a group of strangers living in shared quarters, to do unknown work he’d never done before, made my heart so full or pride. His courage. His willingness to be uncomfortable and do the difficult thing. More than some adults are even capable of. The intention was that he’d go through a month of training and then relocate to a community in need. He was sent to North Carolina where he’s worked beside Habitat for Humanity and helped build a home for a family in need. 🏡 The stipulation was always known that he and his team could be called at any time to help with disaster relief. Well, the time came. Yesterday he and his team made their way down to Florida where they are helping to clean, repair, and serve communities hard-hit by the recent hurricane.🌪️ We’ve spoken the last few days and although he was nervous about what he’d see, and by the overwhelming devastation, he’s faced this circumstance’s arrival with courage, grace, and love to make a positive impact. 🌎 I am so proud of him. He’s living the depth of suffering and hope, while so many, including me, experience through a distance and safety of pictures. I told him that he’s learning to stand tall, and to face towards the sun. 🌻☀️ He’s showing me the importance of real courage. Cheers to my kid, and those beside him, who offer hope for the future. ❤️🦋⭐️

thousands of unseeable miles away
helene swirls hot, angry, resolute
an ocean siphoned

into heaven
to return
to plummet
to deconstruct
to release heat, force,
indifference

by fate, god, grace,
i glance out a window
disturbance ripples emulate
over pool water

in the eye
a tiny bumble bee
treads,
frantic

i step outside
witness still-viable wings
wanting life
treading life
struggling to siphon more
life

i grab a net
extend its metal arm
towards the mouth of a
hopeful bee

her tight grasp is
immediate
unmistakable

i lift the safety net above water
she rides through calmer
wind

lowering gently
onto dry land
she gathers her breath
in an instant

buzzes away
onto her next waiting flower
then and here,
when i am small within a vast
churning mysterious life

our chance moment
of shared survival is
enough

Visited the very beautiful yet strange and extreme

Visited the very beautiful yet strange and extremely elitist Annenberg property of Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage. My initial intention was to use some of the objects, architecture, history, and landscapes as writing Invitations for Franchon @lalanative to evoke creativity. This home was known for hosting world leaders and dignitaries. A strange environment, I felt the extravagance unsettling. An art capsule of decadence, self-grandeur, disproportional wealth.
